The Maasai Mara National Reserve

MaasaiMara1A holiday in Kenya would not be complete without visiting the home of the world’s most celebrated wildlife migration event – the Great Wildebeest Migration that falls between the month of July and August.

The Maasai Mara takes the center stage in the migration with the wilderbeasts crossing over from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya. Stretching over  1510 square km of land with open grassland and the Mara River flowing across, it is also a residential a game reserve to the ‘Big Five’(lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah and elephant) among other similarly enchanting wildlife species.

While in the Mara you will get to witness the migration of over a million wildebeests and other herbivores crossing the Mara River and leaping for their lives from the deadly crocodile jaws.  An enchanting view of large herds of herbivores flocking to the open grasslands and occupying endless columns of pasture also forms part of the scenic beauty at Maasai Mara. The migration is known to attract the Big Cats of Africa such as the Lion, Leopard and Cheetah. This sets the stage for prey – hunting from these seasoned ‘hunters’. Tourists get to enjoy the live action as it unfolds right in front of them.
